Back at CGC: Another Weekend of Miniature Painting Magic

🐙 Back at CGC: Our November Painting Competition at Powell-Cotton Museum

In November 2025, we were excited to return to CGC (Canterbury Gaming Convention) for another weekend of creativity — this time at the incredible Powell-Cotton Museum, just outside Canterbury.

On 8th & 9th November, we hosted the Agitated Kraken Miniature Painting Competition once again, welcoming both familiar faces and brand-new painters — and it was especially great to have returning judge Sara of Dinky Drawings back with us for another event.

A Very Different (and Very Cool) Venue

Holding a miniature painting competition at Powell-Cotton Museum made for a completely different atmosphere — in the best possible way.

While the convention itself took place across the museum, our competition was hosted in the dedicated events hall, allowing us to respect the museum’s moisture controls while still giving painters a great space to work.

The events hall gave painters a comfortable, well-organised area to focus on their work, while still being part of the wider convention experience. It was great to see people stopping by, watching painters work, and asking questions about the models and techniques on display.

More Painters Than Ever

One of the biggest highlights of the November event was the turnout. We were thrilled to welcome even more participants than we had at our August competition, which was incredibly encouraging to see.

Coming into November, we were able to act on feedback from our earlier event — and this time, we were much better equipped. We were proudly sponsored by The Army Painter¼, which meant we could offer:

  • More brushes, so painters weren’t left waiting

  • A much larger colour palette, giving everyone more freedom to experiment

  • Easier access to clean water throughout the competition

  • Wet palettes to help with paint consistency during longer sessions

These improvements made a noticeable difference, and it was great to see painters able to focus fully on creativity rather than logistics.

Painters once again worked from a limited selection of miniatures, and just like before, the variety of finished pieces was incredible. Different colour palettes, moods, and storytelling choices showed just how creative the community really is — even when starting from the same models.

Community Makes the Difference

One of the best parts of the weekend was the atmosphere around the tables. Painters chatting, sharing tips, admiring each other’s work, and cheering each other on is exactly what we want these events to be about.

Whether someone was picking up a brush for the first time or had years of experience, everyone was welcome — and that sense of inclusivity is something we’re really proud of.

A Special Thank You to a Returning Judge

We’d like to give a special thank you to Sara of Dinky Drawings, who returned to judge our competition once again.

Having Sara back was fantastic. Her enthusiasm, insight, and encouragement helped create such a welcoming atmosphere for painters of all experience levels. Her continued support means a lot to us, and we’re incredibly grateful she chose to be part of the event again.

📾 A Weekend Worth Remembering

We captured plenty of moments from across the weekend — painters deep in concentration, finished miniatures on display, and visitors stopping to take a closer look.

Looking Ahead

Hosting the Agitated Kraken Miniature Painting Competition at CGC for a second time — with an even bigger turnout and clear improvements — reinforced something important for us: these events really matter.

They give people a reason to sit down, create, and connect — and that’s exactly what we want to keep doing. That’s why we’re excited to share that we’re already confirmed to attend CGC 2026, which will once again be held at the Kent University Indoor Tennis Hall, Canterbury, on August 15th & 16th.

We’re really looking forward to being back, building on what we’ve learned, and making the experience even better.

We’ll be taking everything we learned from the November event forward into:

  • Future in-person competitions

  • Online painting events

  • More conventions and community meet-ups
